Designing a Tech Career Roadmap

Designing a Tech Career Roadmap

Highlights and lessons learnt from the video "Designing a tech career roadmap".

Building a career in tech can be many things to many people. To some, it is a mountain, one they're super scared of scaling. To others, it is still a mountain, but one that is easily scalable and yet to others, it is a walk in the park.

For people like me who are either new to tech or still trying to find their footing, it can be a tard difficult to build a successful career. A million and one challenges lie ahead and surmounting those challenges can be such a chore.

One of the things that can help with a smooth building is a tech career roadmap.

What is a Roadmap?

A roadmap is basically a flexible planning schedule to reach a particular goal.

In the video, Designing a Tech Career Roadmap, Yewande Odumosu spoke extensively on designing a tech career roadmap and she gave some real life examples.

What lessons did I learn from Designing a Tech Career Roadmap?

A tech career roadmap can either be linear or non-linear. If you ask me, I'll stick with a non-linear roadmap. Why? Well, as an individual, my interests evolve as I learn and of course, tech, as a whole, also evolves.

I may love designing at the very beginning and somewhere down the line, I could pick an interest in writing code.

Some of the things that can influence a good career roadmap include:

  • Understanding the skills you currently have.

  • An idea of the type of skills you desire to have.

In addition to this, it is important to note that in designing a tech career roadmap,

There is no right or wrong roadmap.

Whatever roadmap you end up designing is solely focused on you and your journey.

How do I apply the lessons I learnt from Designing a Tech Career Roadmap?

I think the very first step in applying these lessons is to believe that I can have a successful career in tech. The right mindset is vital to achieving my goal.

Keep learning. Learning never ends. Take courses both offline and online and give those courses a timeline. Udemy is my best friend at this point.

Put myself out there. Volunteer for events, speak at events, write (this should be fun). The aim of writing is mainly to document my journey and share my ideas.

Make myself visible. Share my work, starting with this blog article. (says a little internal prayer)

That being said, let's get started!
